Your Medicare choices in Florida
Every Florida beneficiary starts with the same two paths once they have Original Medicare, Part A and Part B. From there, the details of networks, drug coverage, and out of pocket costs are what separate one plan from another.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C), an all in one alternative to Original Medicare, usually with a provider network and often with prescription drug coverage included.
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) paired with a standalone Part D drug plan, which lets you use any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare.
- Standalone Part D prescription drug coverage, which can be added to Original Medicare or a Medigap plan.
- Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNP) for beneficiaries who also qualify for Florida Medicaid.
What makes Florida different
Florida is one of the largest Medicare markets in the country, which means most counties have a wide list of Medicare Advantage plans to choose from. That variety is helpful, but it also makes a side by side comparison of doctors, hospitals, and drug formularies more important. Plan availability, networks, and benefits are set county by county, so the right plan in Orange County is not always the right plan in Polk County.
When you can enroll
Enrollment windows are set by Medicare and apply statewide.
- Initial Enrollment Period, the seven month window around your 65th birthday month.
- Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 through December 7, when you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for coverage starting January 1.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 through March 31, for members already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Special Enrollment Periods triggered by events such as moving, losing employer coverage, or a change in Medicaid status.
Free state help is available too
Florida operates SHINE, Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders, a free counseling program through the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. You can use SHINE, Medicare.gov, and an independent agent together. We encourage clients to compare information from all three before deciding.

Do Medicare plans differ by county in Florida?
Yes. Medicare Advantage and Part D plan availability, premiums, provider networks, and extra benefits are approved by county, so two neighbors in different counties can have different options.
Can I keep my Florida doctors?
It depends on the plan. Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks, so we check each of your doctors before you enroll. A Medicare Supplement plan lets you see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare.
Does it cost anything to work with your agency?
No. Our consultations are free and carry no obligation. We are compensated by the insurance carrier if you choose to enroll in a plan we offer.

What if I qualify for both Medicare and Florida Medicaid?
