What is a Medicare Supplement plan?
A Medicare Supplement plan, commonly called Medigap, is private insurance that works hand-in-hand with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). When you have a Medigap policy, Medicare pays its share of approved healthcare costs first, then your Medigap plan pays its share, covering many of the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance amounts Original Medicare leaves behind. Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, which means Plan G from one carrier delivers the same core benefits as Plan G from any other carrier. Premiums, customer service, and rate stability are where carriers differ, which is why working with an independent Florida Medicare agent matters.
Popular Medigap plans in Florida
- Plan G, the most comprehensive Medigap plan available to those newly eligible. Covers the Part A deductible, coinsurance, skilled nursing, foreign travel emergencies, and Part B excess charges. You pay only the annual Part B deductible.
- Plan N, lower premiums than Plan G, with small copays for office and ER visits and no coverage for Part B excess charges.
- High deductible Plan G, significantly lower premiums in exchange for paying a higher annual deductible before the plan starts to pay.
- Plan F, only available to those eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
Doctors, networks, and travel
One advantage of a Medicare Supplement plan is freedom of choice. Medigap policies travel with you, so you can see any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare, no networks, no referrals to see specialists. For Florida snowbirds who split time between Florida and another state, that flexibility is often the deciding factor over Medicare Advantage.
When can you enroll in a Medigap plan?
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is the most important window for Medicare Supplement coverage. It's a one-time, 6-month period that starts the first month you're 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this window, Florida carriers cannot deny coverage or charge more based on your health. Outside this window, you may be subject to medical underwriting unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right (for example, losing employer coverage).
Pairing Medigap with Part D
Modern Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. To stay covered and avoid late enrollment penalties, most beneficiaries pair their Medicare Supplement with a standalone Part D Prescription Drug Plan. We review your medications against each plan's formulary before recommending one.
